What to expect

Once you have been referred to the dietitian, you will be contacted to arrange an initial consultation at a mutually convenient time and venue. We allow 45 minutes – 1 hour for this consultation, which in our experience is plenty of time to cover all the relevant issues.

You will be asked to keep a chronological record of all the foods and drinks that you take for 2-3 days prior to your appointment and to bring this with you to your consultation.

During the Consultation...

  • During the consultation you will be weighed and have your height measured, therefore, it is advisable to wear light clothing or layers of clothing and easy to remove footwear.
  • We do not perform any investigative procedures such as allergy or blood tests.
  • Your medical conditions, symptoms and psychological issues will be discussed and how these are affecting your diet.
  • A detailed assessment of your nutritional status and dietary intake will be performed, following which tailored nutritional advice will be provided. In the majority of cases, this will be supported by written information and relevant resources.
  • You will have plenty of opportunity to ask any questions that you may have.
  • A follow-up consultation will be offered if applicable, which takes approximately 30 minutes and is designed to monitor your progress and/or provide extended information and education regarding your diet.
  • A letter is always sent to your referring doctor (and G.P. if not the same as the referring doctor) containing details regarding your consultation with the dietitian. If you wish for a copy of this letter as well, please let the dietitian know at your consultation.
